Pan African School For Materials/Mathematics And Science For Sub Saharan Africa

(PASMAT V August 19-25, 2018/ MS4SSA August 19-31, 2018) @ AfDB HALL, African University Of Science And Technology, Abuja.

Welcome From Pan African Materials Institute (PAMI)

It is with great pleasure that we at the Pan African Materials Institute (PAMI) welcome you to the Pan African School of Materials (PASMAT V) and the 2nd Workshop Seminar in the Mathematics and Science for Sub-Saharan Africa (MS4SSA) – Nigeria Node. The theme for the PASMAT V workshop is tagged as “Materials for African Development” while that of the MS4SSA is “ Strengthening the STEM Pipeline Through Innovative Teaching”.

The Mathematics and Science for Sub-Saharan Africa (MS4SSA) – Nigeria Node; an initiative of the World Bank, is aimed at re-inventing and modifying the pedagogical approach of teaching mathematics and sciences in primary and secondary schools in the Sub-Sahara region. These efforts are aimed at infusing new knowledge into the regional knowledge approach of teaching mathematics and sciences. The initial phase will be to implement the MS4SSA program in a large sample of schools in Nigeria (and the West Africa region) and then evaluate the impact of the program to assess how the program can be replicated in other schools within Nigeria and the Sub-Saharan Africa region. The MS4SSA program will support the capacity development of teacher training institutions in Nigeria and regional countries in all aspects relevant to strengthening mathematics and science teaching in these countries. The MS4SSA will also collaborate with other Regional Nodes in order to share and disseminate good practices.

During the PASMAT V sessions, a regional training program aimed at providing hands-on experience to a wide array of participants, will be held. The Pan African School of Materials Science and Engineering is a regional initiative, which commenced in 2011, to disseminate Materials Science and Engineering education all across Africa. This year’s activities would involve a lot of hands-on sessions within the newly installed AfDB Laboratory building at AUST. The proceedings of the experimental work carried out at this workshop will be published as a permanent record of the activities.

We welcome you to attend both events and make contributions to both activities in a manner that ensures continuity.

Professor Wole Soboyejo, the Bernard M. Gordon Dean of Engineering at the Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), USA and Robert Goodman also from the USA will be the Keynote speakers for the PASMAT V and MS4SSA workshops respectively.
